Agli inizi del novecento la Gare era uno spazio “mezzo vuoto”, formato da campi, alcuni capannoni industriali, un largo fascio di binari ferroviari, la stazione di refrigerazione Paris-Orléans (oggi Les Frigos, al centro della foto). L’area è diventata in seguito un grande polo industriale, ma è negli anni ‘90 che inizia “la più grande operazione urbana di Parigi”: i vecchi edifici sono stati quasi tutti abbattuti e rimpiazzati da nuovi, gli spazi vuoti riempiti. Voilà, il “mezzo vuoto” si è trasformato in “troppo pieno”.

At the beginning of the twentieth century the Gare was a “half empty” space, made up of fields, some industrial warehouses, a wide bundle of railway tracks, the Paris-Orléans refrigeration station (today Les Frigos, in the centre of the photo). The area later became a large industrial centre, but it was in the 1990s that “the largest urban operation in Paris” began: the old buildings were almost all demolished and replaced by new ones, the empty spaces have been filled. Voilà, the “half empty” has turned into “too full”.
