LA CASETTA DEI MUGNAI

“Niente di più pittoresco oltre a questa meravigliosa rovina, di cui si è impossessato un mugnaio e che nessuno contesta” (Alexandre Dumas, Le Spéronare, 1888). Questo piccolo edificio, sopra il Teatro Greco, è la traccia dei Mulini di Galerme, un antico complesso di mulini ad acqua, fatti costruire dal barone Pietro Gaetani e posti sopra la cavea del teatro. La loro costruzione, però, è stata molto discussa sia all’epoca sia nel corso del tempo, finendo così per diventare oggetto di controversie giudiziarie. I mulini furono demoliti uno dopo l’altro a partire dalla prima metà dell’Ottocento, riportando il parco alle sue origini: un luogo d’incontro e di spettacolo del Mediterraneo. Ma come mai la casetta è ancora lì?
THE MILLER’S SMALL HOUSE

“Nothing can be more picturesque than this marvellous ruin, which a miller has taken possession of and which no one contests” (Alexandre Dumas, Le Spéronare, 1888). This small building, above the Greek Theatre, is the trace of the Mulini di Galerme, an ancient complex of water mills, built by Baron Pietro Gaetani and placed above the auditorium of the theatre. Their construction, however, was much discussed both at the time and over time, thus ending up becoming the subject of legal disputes. The mills were demolished one after the other starting from the first half of the 19th century, bringing the park back to its origins: a meeting and performance place of the Mediterranean. But why is the small house still there?
